Daylight savings time is coming up! That means it will be darker when the bus comes to pick up your students in the morning. With this in mind, I’ve got an extra tip that came right from our bus drivers: 🔦flashlights!!🔦 Many of our drivers ask their high school and middle school students to hold a flashlight (or turn on their phone flashlights) while waiting for their bus in the mornings. That way, the bus driver can easily see that a student is out waiting for the bus. This is especially helpful in the event that a spare driver has to cover the route.

Why doesn’t my school bus have seat belts? When you get on a school bus, you might notice that the seats don’t have seat...
When you get on a school bus, you might notice that the seats don’t have seat belts, or that only a few seats have seat belts. There is a good reason for this- the school bus uses a special crash protection system called “compartmentalization”. Under this system, the seats are designed to have high backs, protective cushioning, and close spacing so that any impact is absorbed by the bus instead of your body. Some people describe this... system as being similar to the way an egg carton protects eggs from cracking. The NHTSA determined that the compartmentalization system was the best way to keep passengers safe on the large school bus. Even with this system in place, work is still being done all the time to ensure school buses are as safe as they can possibly be. For this reason, most small buses have seat belts in every seat, and some new large buses are being built with seat belts in every seat as well. If your school bus has seat belts, you should wear them (in fact, Maine law requires it). But knowing that the seats themselves are designed to protect you may serve as a good reminder to always sit safely on the bus and avoid damaging the seats.
