    Pre-K General Information
    • Through the PreK program, we hope to increase access to high-quality early childhood learning opportunities for students prior to entering Kindergarten. The program supports physical, social, emotional, and academic development so that students become stronger learners, ready for Kindergarten and beyond.
    • Our district currently has 6 PreK classrooms among 4 of our elementary schools.  H.B. Emery Jr. Memorial School (Limington) and Hollis Elementary School (Hollis) each have one classroom.  Edna Libby Elementary School (Standish) and Buxton Center Elementary School (Buxton) each have two classrooms.  Each classroom will have a maximum of 16 student seats open for 2025-2026, and has a full-time teacher and full-time Educational Technician (assistant) for the 16 students in the class, to ensure that a 1:8 ratio is achieved.
    • Our PreK program is a 5 day per week program, during regular school hours, following the MSAD#6 school calendar.
    • The daily schedule will adhere to state regulations, which include aspects such as student grouping, physical movement, fresh air, and rest. Similarly, the setting will be appropriately sized, accessible, and proximate to necessary resources (toilets, sinks, personal storage).
    • Our district uses the PreK for ME Curriculum, designed and encouraged by the Maine State Department of Education Early Learning Team.  This curriculum supports Maine's Early Learning and Development Standards, (MELDS).
    • Growth will be monitored by the teachers using appropriate assessments.
    • Families that wish to include their child will apply. Students will be screened (using the same screener we use for Kindergarten but calibrated for four-year-olds).
    • MSAD6 partners with Child Development Services (CDS) to provide IEP-identified support for students with mild developmental needs (such as speech, PT/OT, etc.)
    • The MSAD#6 Transportation Department provides transportation to all PreK students.  They ride buses to and from school daily, either from home or a before- or after-care placement.
    • Prior to school opening there will be an Open House so PreK students can meet their teacher and classmates and see their classroom.  More details about specific routines and expectations will be provided by your child’s teacher.
    • Students follow the regular school schedule daily, and participate in art, music, and physical education classes, as well as weekly school library visits.  An example schedule is to the right.
    • MSAD#6 recognizes that parent/caregiver involvement is a significant factor in a successful educational experience for all students. Regular school-to-home communication is a priority for our PreK teachers, and MSAD#6 encourages parents and caregivers to become involved in their child’s education and stay connected with their student’s teacher and school.  There are various school programs, events, and engagement opportunities that Pre-K families are welcome to attend!  There will be formal parent/teacher conferences scheduled twice a year (roughly fall and spring) and progress reports sent home three times a year (fall, winter, and spring).
    • There is no cost to families, and all of our PreK students have the opportunity to have free breakfast and lunch daily.
    Pre-K Selection Criteria & Process
    • Selection Process
      • Our Pre-K classrooms must reflect the demographics of our schools in the areas of socio-economic status, multilingual learners, and learners identified for special education.
      • Once parents register their child for PreK, a screening appointment will be made.
      • Students are screened using the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL4).  Parents also fill out a questionnaire.  This information is used by school teams to select a class that is representative of the school population.  We do not automatically take the neediest of students or the highest performing students, and we do not use a lottery system.   Our goal is to select a diverse group of students who would most benefit from exposure to the academics and/or social-emotional aspects of PreK, in preparation for a successful school career.
    • Some of the criteria we consider:
      • Potential delays as shown on the DIAL4
      • Motor ability
      • Speech and language concerns
      • Social Concerns (particularly how to adapt to school, how to behave among classmates, etc.)
      • Having an existing IEP, with needs that our public PreK classroom can accommodate
      • Student behaviors as noted on the DIAL4
      • Social/emotional needs, such as the ability to initiate play and have conversations
      • Parent concerns (from questionnaire or interview)
      • A significant gap between abilities
      • Overall health and wellness
    • Notification of Selection
      • The school will contact parents/guardians about selections.  Once the school informs the registrar’s office, the pending enrollment will be processed and an enrollment accepted email will be sent.
      • A waiting list will be maintained for families whose children are not selected but would like to be considered if a spot opens up.
