A Message from Superintendent Campbell - Updates Regarding BEHS Gymnasium Repairs.
Dear MSAD 6 Families,
I am writing to provide an update regarding the high school gymnasium roof leak that occurred in February and to share our plans for addressing the resulting damage and long-term facility needs.
Following the leak, we received two quotes to address the gym floor: $51,400 to fully refinish the floor so it matches the surrounding area, or $16,800 to repair the immediate damage, though the finish would not match. Given that our insurance deductible for water damage is $50,000, the full refinishing option would have required significant out-of-pocket district funds. Ultimately, I decided to go with the $16,800 repair option so there would be a usable gymnasium. Additionally, the repair was one-third of the cost, and we had no guarantee that the roof would not leak again, potentially damaging a newly refinished floor.
Looking ahead, we are currently analyzing all district roofs to prevent future issues. We have earmarked $1.4 million of capital reserve funds specifically for critical maintenance issues not covered by bond funds. The high school gym roof is a high priority in this plan, and we will be utilizing $117,000 of these reserve funds to properly repair it.
We recognize that the gymnasium is an essential community space. Once the roof is successfully repaired, our athletic director will use gate receipt funds to completely refinish the floor. The flooring company has agreed to perform this work for the original difference in cost, which is $34,600.
We appreciate your patience and support as we work through these repairs. We want our athletes, students, and community to be proud of our Scot facilities.
Sincerely,
Brian Campbell, M. Ed, CAGS
