Today we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr who was born on January 15, 1929. He became one of the most prominent figures of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s; known for peaceful protests and civil disobedience, as opposed to the violent actions of some of his contemporaries. He was also a firm believer in using the courts to challenge unjust laws. One of his most famous court cases was Brown v. Board of Education, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
